The upper and lower bearings for the connecting rod base create a complete circle around the crankshaft journal to allow smooth rotational movement as the crankshaft turns. With the upper and lower shells connected, they allow oil flow through the notched oil passages to keep the connection between the connecting rod base and the crankshaft journal properly lubricated, preventing metal to metal wear.
