The purge valve is ECU-controlled and opens to purge fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the running engine for burning. The valve also serves a diagnostic purpose, as it remains closed during onboard tests that check for fuel vapor leaks to the atmosphere. A failed purge valve can cause engine performance problems and store diagnostic trouble codes, commonly P0441.
